All wines that carry the Mt Difficulty Bannockburn label are subject to two strict criteria: they have to be sourced from vineyards situated in a very specific area – Bannockburn, south of the Kawarau River – and they are to be under the umbrella of the Mt Difficulty viticulture team. The reasons for these self-imposed constraints are that we believe this to be an area with very special qualities for growing grapes, and that the management of the vineyard is reflected in the quality of the ultimate product.

Growers Series

The grapes for the wines that carry the Mt Difficulty label have traditionally been sourced from vineyards situated on the South side of the Kawarau River at Bannockburn. The Growers Series first appeared in 2011 with the release of Mt Difficulty Growers Series Packspur Pinot Noir 2009. The label allows us to showcase the terroir of different sub-regions, the first of which is Lowburn. Lowburn is situated on the northern side of Cromwell, as opposed to Bannockburn to the South. Recently, we released our first Pinot Noir from the sub-region of Bendigo. Bendigo lies to the east of Clutha River, with our vineyard on the elevated terrace at 330 - 350 metres. In the near future we will be revealing a new site sourced from an elevated vineyard in Gibbston.  The Growers Series label continues to evolve and offer exciting wine from across the various sub-regions of Central Otago.
Growers Series
Since 2001 Mt Difficulty Wines has become renowned for the Single Vineyard wines we produce from the best sites on its Bannockburn properties. With variations in soils, microclimates and grape clones the sites each have significantly different features. The philosophy of the Single Vineyard wines is to display the characteristics that are particular to their terroir, thus each Single Vineyard wine tells the unique story of its own place.

Roaring Meg

As Mt Difficulty Wines grows, opportunities present themselves from time to time to take on new properties via lease or long-term contract. Some of these vineyards are located south of the Kawarau River and are leased back to Mt Difficulty by the founding partners, and so still qualify for our Bannockburn wines. However, those outside of Bannockburn are used to produce Roaring Meg wines. All of these satellite vineyards are located in the Cromwell basin and all are cared for on a day to day basis by Mt Difficulty's viticulture team. At almost 80 hectares, they make up close to half of the vineyard area available to Mt Difficulty Wines.
