Tasting Notes
The dry, late summer of 2017 allowed us to capture the pure, ripe riesling flavours. Succulent naval orange and peach lead the charge with lightly honeyed white floral notes adding depth and interest. Luscious stone fruit drives the mid-palate with a degree of richness from the residual sugar. A sweet, aromatic balanced by its natural zesty acidity.
CELLARING POTENTIAL
Mt Difficulty Long Gully Late Harvest Riesling is expected to age beautifully for 7-12 years with careful cellaring.
Vintage Notes
VINTAGE 2017
A very interesting season - overall we ended up with an average amount of heat even though the season had a distinctly cool bend to it. A very warm wet spring kicked off the growing season in style with very early bud-burst. Just as we were entering into flowering, the weather deteriorated with very cool weather being the norm right through late December. This impacted on flowering with lower than average yields.
WINEMAKING CONSIDERATIONS
A section of Long Gully Vineyard was separated and left to ripen further before harvesting. We harvested these grapes late in the season on the 10th of May; they were harvested cool and then handled in a reductive fashion throughout processing. The wine was racked clean and fermented relatively warm to protect the lovely ethereal generous nature of late harvest Riesling. The ferment was stopped by chilling and racking to another tank. The wine was filtered but not fined prior to bottling in September.
