CELLAR DOOR & WINERY RESTAURANT
It is with great sadness that we’re letting you know that our Cellar Door and Restaurant will be closed while New Zealand is at Threat Level 4. We are so grateful for your incredible support over these tough times and we are sending our very best wishes to you and your friends and families. We hope to see you again soon.
Stay strong and stay safe,
The Mt Difficulty Team
The Cellar Door at Mt Difficulty showcases its wines to thousands of visitors annually. It's the perfect spot to experience Mt Difficulty's unique hospitality while taking in the magical views of Bannockburn's dramatic rugged rock and thyme landscape.
The venue sits high above the winery on Felton Road, perched on a rocky outcrop looking across the Cromwell basin to Lake Dunstan. The contemporary building was first opened in February 2003, with the wine tasting counter and the restaurant sharing the space inside. In 2011 the decision was made to create a separate wine tasting area to improve the experience of both wine enthusiasts and diners. The new Cellar Door extension opened in May 2012 allowing us to welcome many more friends, both new and old, to share a little of the essence of Central Otago with us.
Our Wine Tasting Experience
Passionate staff who will cater to your tastes and level of wine experience, offering a full range of Mt Difficulty and Roaring Meg wines for $5 per person. All wines are available for purchase, with national and international wine delivery options. While you’re here we invite you to join our Wine Clubs, which offer members the chance to buy wines at special "members only" prices. Find out more…
Casual wine tastings do not require a booking, but we recommend that groups of six or more should contact us prior to visiting.
RESTAURANTThe Winery Restaurant at Mt Difficulty provides a relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy a delicious lunch. The kitchen is open, which offers a unique insight to a chef's world.
On a fine day the outdoor terrace is the perfect spot to take in the flavours of the region while enjoying the uniquely Central Otago views. During winter the view can be enjoyed from behind glass, with fireplaces providing warmth and ambience.
The chef produces imaginative cuisine, and the menu showcases the freshest of produce, with a choice of substantial fare or platters to share. All main meal options come with suggested wine matches, though diners are welcome to make their own choices at our wine tasting counter.
We are open every day, with lunch served daily from 12 noon - 4 pm. Our full A La Carte Menu and platters are available until 3.30pm. A 'platters only' menu is available from 3.30 - 4 pm year round - except from Christmas until Easter, when platters are available in the summer sun until 4.30pm.

FUNCTIONSThe Winery Restaurant at Mt Difficulty is available for private functions by prior arrangement. Please note that opportunities for evening functions are limited. A venue hire charge applies to all evening functions and also to daytime functions which require us to close the restaurant to the general public. The charge is dependent on a number of factors.
Please note that there is no availability for evening functions during our busy summer months.
We specialise in small intimate parties, with 30 people the maximum number we can cater for. The outdoor terrace is not weather-proof so its use is weather dependent.
The venue is licensed until 9pm.
Executive Chef Werner Hecht-Wendt can create a menu to suit your requirements.
