Sustainability

Mt Difficulty is an accredited member of the Sustainable Winegrowing initiative (SWNZ). We have chosen to use the SWNZ framework as a foundation on which to build our own sustainable goals, targeting a higher level than is required by the initiative.

In the vineyard

Our harsh climate in Central Otago gives us a unique opportunity to grow grapes with a lower impact on nature. Cool, dry conditions allow us to be as gentle with the environment as we possibly can. We practice ethical viticulture and undertake an organic approach in the vineyard, with minimal intervention and only very targeted use of herbicides and no harsh insecticides.

We have pioneered a new waste reduction technology called Biochar. The ancient process reuses old vines by breaking them down to a unique form of charcoal, which can be used instead of fertiliser, reducing carbon emissions.

Our compost system turns raw materials into organic matter that is decomposed and recycled, back into the vineyard.

Part of the landscape

Our winery is designed for long term energy efficiency, built in through insulation, an ultrasonic humidification system, a green roof, a wood-chip fired boiler and a subterranean barrel hall.

Our state-of-the-art waste water treatment plant is testament to our intention to do all we can to protect and enhance our environment, both now and in the future.

In an industry dominated by coal-powered glass produced overseas, we have chosen to bottle our wines in New Zealand, using New Zealand-sourced, recycled glass, reducing our carbon footprint and supporting our local industry.

The living roof on top of Mt Difficulty's barrel hall not only conserves energy through evaporative cooling, but also encourages biodiversity and embraces a circular use of water by using process water from winemaking for irrigation.
